GAINES TOWNSHIP - The Psychiatry Residency program overseen by Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine celebrated its first-ever graduating class this month, honoring eight doctors who began their residency four years ago.
Having completed their four-year residency, a standard stage of graduate medical training that is required to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine, several of the graduates will be continuing their early careers with fellowships, two at Pine Rest.

Dr. Mark Eastburg, president and CEO of Pine Rest, said the institution has been seeking to be part of the national solution to the behavioral health access problem for the past seven years through the development of its residency program.
'We are excited that our investment of time and financial resources is coming to fruition, and that the first group of what will eventually be hundreds of new psychiatrists trained in West Michigan will go out and serve both locally and nationally,' Eastburg said.

Starting July 1, the Pine Rest/MSU Psychiatry Residency program will have grown to 41 residents and three fellows -- two in child and adolescent psychiatry and one in geriatric.
